Minneapolis Public Schools welcomes the rich diversity English Language Learners (ELL) bring to our schools. Like all of our students, ELL students have the right to a quality education that reflects Academic and English Language Proficiency Standards. Approximately 9,200 students whose home language is not English attend Minneapolis Public Schools. ELL programs are provided in the Minneapolis Public Schools to ensure that all:

  • Students learn in a setting supportive of their native language and culture.
  • Students are supported to reach high academic standards in English and the content areas from grades K-12.
  • Students have access to the entire school curriculum.
  • Families can participate fully in the education of their children.
  • Students learn to speak, read and write English well.

At Waite Park, we have two ELL teachers. Mr. Sanville works with students with Kindergarten through grade 5 and Ms. O'Connell works with 2nd grade through 5th grade.  In 3rd, 4th and 5th grade Mr. Sanville supportys students in small groups for reading and writing instruction.  In 3rd grade he co-teaches math and in 4th grade he co-teaches writing. Ms. O'Connell supports students with Reading, Writing and Science/Social Studies. She meets with students in small groups to support reading and writing skills. She also co-teaches Science with 2nd Grade to support academic language.
